Emotional Behavior Relationship Counseling in San Jose, Los Gatos, Santa Clara, CA, California - Jason Esswein, MS, MFT

My Approach

“I got so tired of therapists just listening and not offering feedback;
you actually offered advice that I could act on.”
– Anonymous Client

Many clients have come into my office feeling frustrated with other therapists who “just sat there and listened without saying much.”

Although it is important to take the time to vent, provide information, and tell our stories, clients have repeatedly told me how much they appreciate my authenticity and commitment to providing feedback and engaging them as equals.

While remaining empathic and using the professional listening skills necessary for effective counseling and psychotherapy, I strive to provide clear feedback, insight, and advice that many clients have found to be both comforting and refreshing.

I am willing to fully engage with clients and offer my genuine thoughts and insights without being judgmental. And, perhaps most importantly of all, I’m willing to risk initiating and responding to uncomfortable topics when appropriate in our work together.

Each client who comes into my office can expect to be treated with empathy and respect, and I am determined to help you find the help you seek and the services you need.

I personally respond to communications in a timely fashion and offer a free, initial consultation in order to answer your questions and give you the opportunity to make a considered decision about whether or not we may work well together.

In the event one of us decides we’re not a good fit, I readily provide referrals to colleagues who may better suit your needs.

One of the things that makes me a good therapist is that I walk my talk… at least most of the time. Hey, nobody’s perfect! ?

I do my utmost to take excellent care of my physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. If I’m asking my clients to do this, then I’d BETTER be doing the same thing. As Carl Jung said, “You are what you do, not what you say you’ll do.”

I’ve found that people tend to sense on a subtle, energetic level whether or not you do what you say… and how well I take care of myself is going to show up in the work my clients and I do together; so, it serves all involved when I live my own advice.

Clients who’ve worked with me commonly report enhanced personal effectiveness in many areas of their lives including increased energy, motivation, and sense of purpose, greater self-esteem and relationship satisfaction, and a lessening of anxiety, stress, and depression.

My goal as a therapist is to create a relationship with clients based on mutual honesty and respect. I will strive to ensure you feel heard, understood, and supported, and to see that you gain the insight and self-awareness necessary to understand what you want and how to get there.
